Garage Door Repair Beaumont TX

Garage Door Storm Checklist for Beaumont and Port Arthur

Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. Southeast Texas knows what that means. Rita (2005), Ike (2008), Harvey (2017), and Laura (2020) all hit this area. A garage door is one of the largest openings in a house, so it's worth a few minutes of attention before a storm and again afterward.

We are a referral service. We connect you with independent local garage door pros; we don't do the work ourselves. We can't promise a technician, arrival time, or price.

Before a storm

  1. Look at the door. Check for dents, bent tracks, loose hinges, and cables that look frayed. Damage you can see now is easier to deal with than damage found after a storm.
  2. Look at the hardware. Humid Gulf air and salt speed up rust on springs, rollers, and cables. Heavy rust is a sign to have the door looked at by a professional.
  3. Know your manual release. Most openers have a cord that disconnects the door from the motor so you can lift the door by hand. Find yours before you need it. Do not use it if you think a spring has broken; the door can be much heavier than it looks.
  4. Ask about your door's wind rating. Some doors are built or braced for high winds and some are not. If you're thinking about a replacement or a brace kit, ask the company you talk to what your door is rated for, and get it in writing.
  5. Clear the area. Move loose items away from the door and driveway so they don't become flying debris.
  6. Plan for power. Storms often cut power. Know how the door works without the opener.

After a storm

  1. Stay clear and look first. Check the door from a safe distance for bent panels, dented or bowed tracks, and cables that have come loose.
  2. Don't force it. If the door is stuck or crooked, don't run the opener or push the door. See off-track and cable problems.
  3. Watch for a broken spring. A loud bang, a visible gap in the spring, or a door that won't lift may mean a broken spring. See broken spring repair.
  4. Opener trouble after power surges. If the opener won't respond after power comes back, see opener repair.
  5. Take photos of any damage. They help the company that takes your job, and they may help with an insurance claim.
